WASHINGTON — House Democrats released several dozen more photos Thursday from the estate of the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, showing his associations with the rich and famous, as the Department of Justice faces a deadline to release many of its case files on the late financier by the end of the week.
The photos released Thursday were among more than 95,000 that the House Oversight Committee has received after issuing a subpoena for the photos that Epstein had in his possession before he died in a New York jail cell in 2019. Congress has also passed, and President Donald Trump has signed, a law requiring the Justice Department to release its case files on Epstein, and his longtime girlfriend and confidante Ghislaine Maxwell, by Friday. Anticipation about what those files will show is running high after they have been the subject of conspiracy theories and speculation about his friendships with Trump, former President Bill Clinton, the former Prince Andrew, and others.
House Democrats have already released dozens of photos from Epstein's estate showing Trump, Clinton and Andrew, who lost his royal title and privileges this year amid scrutiny of his relationship with the wealthy financier. The photos released Thursday showed Epstein cooking with Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, an Emirati businessman. The photos also include the billionaire Bill Gates and images of a 2011 dinner of notable people and wealthy philanthropists hosted by a nonprofit group. The committee made no accusations of wrongdoing by the men in the photos.
There were also images of passports, visas and identification cards from Russia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, South Africa and Lithuania with personally identifying information redacted, as well as photos of Epstein with women or girls whose faces were blacked out. The committee has said it is redacting information from the photos that may lead to the identity of victims being revealed.
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the oversight panel, said in a statement that the "new images raise more questions about what exactly the Department of Justice has in its possession. We must end this White House cover-up, and the DOJ must release the Epstein files now.”

NEW YORK — Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend and longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell asked a federal judge on Wednesday to set aside her sex trafficking conviction and free her from a 20-year prison sentence, saying “substantial new evidence” has emerged proving that constitutional violations spoiled her trial.
Maxwell maintained in a habeas petition she has promised to file since August that information that would have resulted in her exoneration at her 2021 trial was withheld and false testimony was presented to the jury.
She said the cumulative effect of the constitutional violations resulted in a “complete miscarriage of justice.”
A habeas petition (or writ of habeas corpus petition) is a legal request for a court to review the legality of someone’s detention, demanding that the custodian (like a prison official) bring the prisoner before a judge to justify the imprisonment, serving as a fundamental safeguard against unlawful confinement and arbitrary detention by ensuring due process. Filed by or on behalf of someone in custody, it challenges constitutional violations, such as ineffective legal counsel or unfair trials, and seeks release or other relief, often as a last resort after appeals are exhausted.
“Since the conclusion of her trial, substantial new evidence has emerged from related civil actions, Government disclosures, investigative reports, and documents demonstrating constitutional violations that undermined the fairness of her proceeding,” the filing in Manhattan federal court said. “In the light of the full evidentiary record, no reasonable juror would have convicted her.”
The filing came just two days before records in her case were scheduled to be released publicly as a result of President Donald Trump's signing of the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The law, signed after months of public and political pressure, requires the Justice Department to provide the public with Epstein-related records by Dec. 19.
Forced to act by the new transparency law, the Justice Department has said it plans to release 18 categories of investigative materials gathered in the massive sex trafficking probe, including search warrants, financial records, notes from interviews with victims, and data from electronic devices.
Epstein, a millionaire financier, was arrested in July 2019 on sex trafficking charges. A month later, he was found dead in his cell at a New York federal jail and the death was ruled a suicide. Maxwell, a British socialite, was arrested a year later and was convicted of sex trafficking in December 2021. She was interviewed by the Justice Department’s second-in-command in July and was soon afterward moved from a federal prison in Florida to a prison camp in Texas.
After the Justice Department asked a New York federal judge to permit grand jury and discovery materials gathered prior to her trial to be released publicly, attorney David Markus wrote on her behalf that while Maxwell now “does not take a position” on unsealing documents from her case, doing so “would create undue prejudice so severe that it would foreclose the possibility of a fair retrial” if her habeas petition succeeds.
The records, Markus said, “contain untested and unproven allegations.”
Last week, Judge Paul A. Engelmayer in Manhattan granted the Justice Department's request to publicly release the materials.
On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said during a news conference on another topic that he would follow the law and the judge's orders pertaining to the records.
Engelmayer, who along with other judges had previously rejected Justice Department unsealing requests before the transparency law was passed, said the materials “do not identify any person other than Epstein and Maxwell as having had sexual contact with a minor.”

WASHINGTON — The Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee threatened Friday to begin contempt of Congress proceedings against former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton if they refuse to appear for depositions as part of the committee's investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
Rep. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, said in a statement late Friday that the Clintons had “delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the Committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony” for several months and said the committee would begin proceedings to try to force them to testify if they don't appear next week or schedule an appearance in January. 
Comer's statement came just hours after Democrats on the committee had released dozens of photos they had received from Epstein's estate, including images of Clinton and President Donald Trump.
Contempt is one of U.S. lawmakers’ politically messiest and, until recent years, least-used powers. But the way Congress has handled demands for disclosure in the investigation into Epstein has taken on new political significance as the Trump administration faces a deadline next week to release the Department of Justice's case files on the late financier.
Bill Clinton was among a number of high-powered people connected to Epstein, a wealthy financier, before the criminal investigation against him in Florida became public two decades ago. Clinton has never been accused of wrongdoing by any of the women who say Epstein abused them. 
One of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Giuffre, once gave a newspaper interview in which she described riding in a helicopter with Clinton and flirting with Trump, but she later said in a deposition that those things hadn’t actually happened and were mistakes by the reporter. Clinton has previously said through a spokesperson that while he traveled on Epstein’s jet, he never visited his homes and had no knowledge of his crimes.
Multiple former presidents have voluntarily testified before Congress, but none has been compelled to do so. That history was invoked by Trump in 2022, between his first and second terms, when he faced a subpoena by the House committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, riot by a mob of his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

GOP chairman threatens Clintons with contempt of Congress in Epstein inquiry

NEW YORK — Secret grand jury transcripts from Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 sex trafficking case can be made public, a judge ruled on Wednesday, joining two other judges in granting the Justice Department’s requests to unseal material from investigations into the late financier’s sexual abuse.
U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman reversed his earlier decision to keep the material under wraps, citing a new law that requires the government to open its files on Epstein and his longtime confidant Ghislaine Maxwell. The judge previously cautioned that the 70 or so pages of grand jury materials slated for release are hardly revelatory and “merely a hearsay snippet” of Epstein’s conduct.
On Tuesday, another Manhattan federal judge ordered the release of records from Maxwell’s 2021 sex trafficking case. Last week, a judge in Florida approved the unsealing of transcripts from an abandoned Epstein federal grand jury investigation in the 2000s.
The Justice Department asked the judges to lift secrecy orders in the cases after the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump last month, created a narrow exception to rules that normally keep grand jury proceedings confidential. The law requires that the Justice Department disclose Epstein-related material to the public by Dec. 19. 
The court records cleared for release are just a sliver of the government’s trove — a collection of potentially tens of thousands of pages of documents, including FBI notes and reports; transcripts of witness interviews, photographs, videos and other evidence; Epstein’s autopsy report; flight logs and travel records.
While lawyers for Epstein’s estate told Berman in a letter last week that the estate took no position on the Justice Department’s unsealing request, some Epstein victims backed it. 
“For far too long, the Epstein survivors and the public have been kept in the dark about the inner-workings of Epstein’s decades-long sex trafficking operation,” said Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer for some victims. “This week’s court rulings are an important step toward accountability to close the vast gap between what is known and unknown.”
Another lawyer, Brad Edwards, said unsealing the records “is good, so long as the victims are protected in the process.” But, he added, “the grand jury receives only the most basic information, so, relatively speaking, these particular materials are insignificant.”
Questions about the government’s Epstein files have dominated the first year of Trump’s second term, with pressure on the Republican president intensifying after he reneged on a campaign promise to release the files. His administration released some material, most of it already public, disappointing critics and some allies.
Berman was matter-of-fact in his ruling on Wednesday, writing that the transparency law “unequivocally intends to make public Epstein grand jury materials and discovery materials” that had previously been covered by secrecy orders. The law “supersedes the otherwise secret grand jury materials,” he wrote.
The judge, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, implored the Justice Department to carefully follow the law's privacy provisions to ensure that victims' names and other identifying information are blacked out. Victim safety and privacy “are paramount,” he wrote.
In court filings, the Justice Department informed Berman that the only witness to testify before the Epstein grand jury was an FBI agent who, the judge noted, “had no direct knowledge of the facts of the case and whose testimony was mostly hearsay.”
The agent testified on two days, on June 18, 2019, and July 2, 2019. The rest of the grand jury presentation consisted of a PowerPoint slideshow and four pages of call logs. The July 2 session ended with grand jurors voting to indict Epstein.
Epstein, a millionaire money manager known for socializing with celebrities, politicians, billionaires and the academic elite, killed himself in jail a month after his 2019 arrest. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 by a federal jury of sex trafficking for helping recruit some of Epstein’s underage victims and participating in some of the abuse. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Maxwell’s lawyer told a judge last week that unsealing records from her case “would create undue prejudice” and could spoil her plans to file a habeas petition, a legal filing seeking to overturn her conviction. The Supreme Court in October declined to hear Maxwell’s appeal.
Maxwell’s grand jury records include testimony from the FBI agent and a New York Police Department detective.
Judge Paul A. Engelmayer sought to temper expectations as he approved their release on Tuesday, writing that the materials “do not identify any person other than Epstein and Maxwell as having had sexual contact with a minor.”
“They do not discuss or identify any client of Epstein’s or Maxwell’s,” wrote Engelmayer, an appointee of President Barack Obama, a Democrat. “They do not reveal any heretofore unknown means or methods of Epstein’s or Maxwell’s crimes.”

WASHINGTON — House Democrats released a selection of photos from the estate of Jeffrey Epstein on Friday, including some of Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and the former Prince Andrew.
The dozens of photos initially released by Democratic lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee were a small part of more than 95,000 they received from the estate of Epstein, who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The photos released Friday were separate from the case files that the Department of Justice is now under compulsion to release, but anticipation is growing as the Trump administration faces a deadline next week to produce the Epstein files that have been the source of conspiracy theories and speculation for years.
The photos were released without captions or context and included a black-and-white image of Trump alongside six women whose faces were blacked out. 
The president said he hadn’t seen the photos from Epstein’s estate released Friday, but they were “no big deal.”
Trump said Epstein was “all over Palm Beach” and had “photos with everybody.”
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, did not say whether any of the women in the photos was a victim of abuse, but he added, “Our commitment from day one has been to redact any photo, any information that could lead to any sort of harm to any of the victims.”
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson accused Democrats of “selectively releasing cherry-picked photos with random redactions to try and create a false narrative" and called it part of a “Democrat hoax against President Trump.”
Many of the photos have already circulated in the public. Democrats pledged to continue to release photos in the days and weeks ahead, as they look to pressure Trump over his Republican administration’s earlier refusal to release documents in the Epstein probe. Garcia said his staff had looked through about a quarter of the images it had received from Epstein’s estate, which included photos that were sent to him or that he had in his possession.
“Donald Trump right now needs to release the files to the American public so that the truth can come out and we can actually get some sense of justice for the survivors,” Garcia added.
He initially released 19 photos Friday morning, then roughly 70 more photos later Friday, including one of Epstein taking a bath, a photo of him with a swollen lip, photos of his home and a photo of him posing with a book about the scandal.
Trump, once a close friend of Epstein, has said he parted ways with him long before he faced the sex trafficking charges. Clinton, too, has minimized his relationship with Epstein, acknowledging that he traveled on Epstein’s private jet but saying through a spokesperson that he had no knowledge of the late financier’s crimes. Clinton also has never been accused of misconduct by Epstein’s known victims. However, Republicans on the House committee are pushing him and Hillary Clinton to testify in their investigation.
Rep. James Comer, the GOP chair of the House Oversight Committee, threatened late Friday to begin contempt of Congress proceedings against the Clintons if they don't appear next week or reschedule depositions in January.
A spokesperson for the Republican-controlled committee also said that nothing in the documents the committee has received shows “any wrongdoing” by Trump.
Andrew lost his royal titles and privileges this year amid new revelations of his ties to Epstein, though he has denied wrongdoing.
The photo release also included images of the right-wing political operative Steve Bannon, billionaires Richard Branson and Bill Gates, filmmaker Woody Allen, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and law professor Alan Dershowitz. The men have denied any wrongdoing in their associations with Epstein, who kept many high-profile figures in his circle of friends.
Amid an earlier release of emails between Summers and Epstein, Summers stepped away from his teaching position at Harvard University and faced other fallout to his standing in academic circles.
Allen has faced allegations from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, of molesting her as a child. He has denied the allegations.
Some lawmakers, however, believe that other high-powered figures could be implicated in Epstein’s abuse if the full case files from the Justice Department are released.
Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican who was instrumental in passing a bill to require the public release of the files, said it was a good sign that the Department of Justice has sought to have grand jury material released from several courts.
“The grand jury material is just a small fraction of what the DOJ needs to release, because the FBI and DOJ probably has evidence that they chose not to take to the grand jury because the evidence they’re in possession of would implicate other people, not Epstein or Maxwell,” he said.

House Democrats release photos of Trump, Clinton and Andrew from Epstein's estate

WASHINGTON — What began as a campaign-trail promise to release the Jeffrey Epstein files has become one of the most fraught tests of President Donald Trump’s second term — opening a rift in his political coalition and raising the stakes for an administration now under intense pressure to produce documents that may fall far short of public expectations.
The issue came to a head this week. After months of efforts by the Trump administration to quash it, both chambers of Congress passed a measure forcing the release of the Epstein files with near-unanimous support. Trump, who changed course days before the vote to bless the effort, signed the legislation Wednesday, starting a 30-day window for the Justice Department to deliver the records.
Expectations are sky-high, fueled by years of conspiracy theories promoted by many now in Trump’s orbit. Yet with some claims — such as a rumored “client list” of prominent men linked to Epstein — already deemed nonexistent by federal officials, the antiestablishment coalition Trump built in part by elevating those theories is showing cracks that may widen with the anticipated release.
“Watching this actually turn into a fight has ripped MAGA apart,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said this week, flanked by Epstein survivors ahead of the House vote.
“The only thing that will speak to the powerful, courageous women behind me is when action is actually taken to release these files,” said Greene, who announced late Friday that she will resign from Congress in January. “And the American people won’t tolerate any other bulls—-.”
<h2>How Epstein files entered the political mainstream</h2>
Epstein’s abuse and 2019 death in a New York jail cell have generated conspiracy theories for years, especially on the political right.
On the campaign trail, Trump expressed openness to releasing the investigative documents, nodding to anti-establishment demands to open up the government’s files on other high-profile cases such as the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
But once Trump was back in office, divulging records from the federal investigations, as well as satisfying the appetites of conspiracy theorists, became less appealing. Attorney General Pam Bondi raised expectations of a full release, only to reverse course over the summer. Her attempt to close the book on the Epstein saga outraged many on the right.
It was the first sign of a rift in Trump’s coalition, and Democrats took notice.
In Congress, they began looking for ways to force Republicans to take votes on releasing the Epstein files. Eventually, they found traction with two tracks: initiating an investigation in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and putting full support behind a rarely successful petition that maneuvers around the House speaker’s control of which bills see the floor.
The Democratic effort, joined by a few key Republicans, including Greene, culminated last week in passage of the bill with overwhelming support from both chambers of Congress. It was a sign that the Epstein files had risen from the realm of obscure conspiracy theorists to a political force that neither political party could deny.
Still, it’s not clear whether the complete files will be released — or that the public interest in them will ever be satisfied.
<h2>The release and the limits of what may be in the files</h2>
At a Tuesday press conference ahead of the House vote, the bill’s sponsors — Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., joined Greene and several Epstein survivors in warning the administration not to hold anything back.
“The real test will be whether the Department of Justice releases the files, or whether it all remains tied up in investigations,” Greene said, adding that whether a list of names is released “will be the real test.”
While Bondi in February said on Fox News that an Epstein “client list” was “sitting on my desk right now to review,” her department has since reversed course, saying such a list doesn't exist. In a letter this July, the Justice Department said its review uncovered no incriminating “client list.”
It’s one example of how the Trump administration helped build hype for the release of files — and a reminder of the political danger in being unable to deliver the material his coalition has long believed is hidden.
Before Congress got involved, tens of thousands of pages of records were released over the years through civil lawsuits, Epstein and Maxwell’s public criminal case dockets, public disclosures and Freedom of Information Act requests. 
Lawmakers believe there are reams more of documents, but they have received little indication that the Department of Justice is ready to put out that information despite a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee that was issued in August.
Khanna said he still has concerns about how fully the administration will comply, but he believes passage of the bill, and the possibility of contempt of Congress, gives lawmakers leverage. He declined to speculate about who might appear in the files but said he expects whistleblowers to emerge if anything is withheld.
“The president has realized, as Marjorie Taylor Greene said, that this is splitting his MAGA base,” Khanna said.
“It would be foolish for him to have a drip, drip, drip fight. I mean, if he wants to fight over Epstein the remainder of his presidency, I suppose we can. But that’s not really smart.”
<h2>‘Forgotten America against the Epstein class’</h2>
Khanna, a Silicon Valley progressive with aspirations for higher office, hopes the Epstein fight will evolve into a broader movement, describing it as a modern version of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “forgotten class against the economic royalists.”
“This is a forgotten America against the Epstein class,” Khanna said in an interview. 
“There’s a real anger at an elite that people think are out of touch and taking away control over the lives,” he added.
As Democrats look for ways to reconnect with working-class voters, Khanna thinks the party should pursue causes like the Epstein files. He has already begun discussions with Massie, Greene and others about teaming up again.
“This crack,” Khanna said of the Epstein vote, is the “answer to taking on Trump.”

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed legislation Wednesday that compels his administration to release files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, bowing to political pressure from his own party after initially resisting those efforts.
Trump could have chosen to release many of the files on his own months ago. 
“Democrats have used the ‘Epstein’ issue, which affects them far more than the Republican Party, in order to try and distract from our AMAZING Victories,” Trump said in a social media post as he announced he had signed the bill.
Now, the bill requires the Justice Department to release all files and communications related to Epstein, as well as any information about the investigation into his death in a federal prison in 2019, within 30 days. It allows for redactions about Epstein’s victims for ongoing federal investigations, but DOJ cannot withhold information due to “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”
It was a remarkable turn of events for what was once a farfetched effort to force the disclosure of case files from an odd congressional coalition of Democrats, one GOP antagonist of the president, and a handful of erstwhile Trump loyalists. As recently as last week, the Trump administration even summoned one Republican proponent of releasing the files, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, to the Situation Room to discuss the matter, although she did not change her mind.
But over the weekend, Trump did a sharp U-turn on the files once it became clear that congressional action was inevitable. He insisted the Epstein matter had become a distraction to the GOP agenda and indicated he wanted to move on.
“I just don’t want Republicans to take their eyes off all of the Victories that we’ve had,” Trump said in a social media post Tuesday afternoon, explaining the rationale for his abrupt about-face.
The House passed the legislation on a 427-1 vote, with Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., being the sole dissenter. He argued that the bill’s language could lead to the release of information on innocent people mentioned in the federal investigation. The Senate later approved it unanimously, skipping a formal vote.
It’s long been established that Trump had been friends with Epstein, the disgraced financier who was close to the world’s elite. But the president has consistently said he did not know of Epstein’s crimes and had cut ties with him long ago.
Before Trump returned to the White House for a second term, some of his closest political allies helped fuel conspiracy theories about the government’s handling of the Epstein case, asserting a cover-up of potentially incriminating information in those files.

What’s in a name? 
If your name is Jeffrey Epstein — and you’re not the deceased convicted pedophile with a private island and a black book of the most powerful men in America — the answer, as it turns out,&nbsp;is quite complicated. 
Manhasset’s Jeffrey Epstein found himself the unintended victim of a case of mistaken identity this week when Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) said on the House floor that campaign contributions to former Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin, now the head of the Environmental Protection Agency,&nbsp;came from the notorious financier, when in fact they originated&nbsp;from the retired North Shore neurosurgeon with the same name. 
And while Crockett, who is serving her first full term in the House, was roundly mocked on social media and in conservative publications for her error — which was only amplified during a&nbsp;disjointed appearance Wednesday night on CNN — Epstein said he's been barraged with calls and media requests about the bodacious blunder. 
Reached by phone on Thursday, Epstein told Newsday he's taking the incident with a grain of salt. 
"It's been crazy the last two days," Epstein, 74, told Newsday. ... "Aside from that, I just laugh. I don't care. I could care less." 
The classic, 'only on Long Island' tale began&nbsp;Tuesday night when Crockett, who is mulling a run for Senate,&nbsp;took to the House floor to disclose that a host of Republicans, including former President George W. Bush, Mitt Romney and Zeldin had taken campaign contributions "from somebody named Jeffrey Epstein." 
Crockett&nbsp;made the remarks in defense of&nbsp;Delegate Stacey Plaskett, a Democrat from the Virgin Islands, who was facing censure by the House after text messages released last week&nbsp;showed she communicated with the convicted sex offender during a 2019 congressional hearing. Then on Wednesday night, Crockett, questioned about the remarks during an appearance on CNN, said her team had Googled the contributions 20 minutes earlier but that she "never said it was that Jeffrey Epstein." 
For his part, Zeldin, who represented Long Island's East End for eight years before running unsuccessfully for governor, and later being appointed as EPA administrator, fired back on X, noting the contributions came from "a physician named Dr. Jeffrey Epstein (who is a totally different person than the other Jeffrey Epstein)." 
Manhasset's Epstein, in fact,&nbsp;donated $1,000 to Zeldin's congressional campaign&nbsp;in April and August 2020, nearly a year after the financier's death. Records show Long Island's Epstein, who also contributed $500 to Romney's 2012 presidential campaign,&nbsp;identified his occupation as "physician." 
Another Jeffrey Epstein, from New Jersey, donated $500 to Zeldin in February 2020, records show. 
With the mix-up now in the rear view mirror, the episode begs the question: What is it like to share a name with one of the country's most reviled and notorious figures? (Long Island actually has at least four Jeffrey Epsteins — the others are in Floral Park, Long Beach and Westbury, records show.) 
"I was here before him and I'm still here," Manhasset’s Epstein responded. "I had the name before he did. And I still have the name." 
But still, he must get some odd glances when providing&nbsp;his name or identification for a takeout order or when making a doctor's appointment, right? 
"When people look at me, I always say, 'What are you talking about?' " Epstein said of his deadpan reply. "I mean, what do you expect? If my name was Jeffrey Dahmer, would they say something also? Of course. But what can you do?"

WASHINGTON — Both the House and Senate acted decisively Tuesday to pass a bill to force the Justice Department to publicly release its files on the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a remarkable display of approval for an effort that had struggled for months to overcome opposition from President Donald Trump and Republican leadership. 
When a small, bipartisan group of House lawmakers introduced a petition in July to maneuver around Speaker Mike Johnson’s control of the House floor, it appeared a longshot effort — especially as Trump urged his supporters to dismiss the matter as a “hoax.” 
Long Island’s four House members all voted for the bill. The only one of them who had not previously disclosed their plans was Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport), who along with Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Amityville) had not signed the petition that led to the vote. 
Garbarino said in a statement Tuesday that he remains concerned about the privacy of victims. He said those concerns need to be addressed in the Senate, "and with that understanding, I supported this measure." 
But both Trump and Johnson failed to prevent the vote. The president in recent days bowed to political reality, saying he would sign the bill. And just hours after the House vote, senators agreed to approve it unanimously, skipping a formal roll call. 
The decisive, bipartisan work in Congress Tuesday further showed the pressure mounting on lawmakers and the Trump administration to meet long-held demands that the Justice Department release its case files on Epstein, a well-connected financier who killed himself in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial in 2019 on charges he sexually abused and trafficked underage girls. 
For survivors of Epstein’s abuse, passage of the bill was a watershed moment in a years-long quest for accountability. 
“These women have fought the most horrific fight that no woman should have to fight. And they did it by banding together and never giving up," said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene as she stood with some of the abuse survivors outside the Capitol Tuesday morning. 
“That’s what we did by fighting so hard against the most powerful people in the world, even the president of the United States, in order to make this vote happen today,” added Greene, a Georgia Republican. 
In the end, only one lawmaker in Congress opposed the bill. Rep. Clay Higgins, a Louisiana Republican who is a fervent supporter of Trump, was the only “nay” vote in the House's 427-1 tally. He said he worried the legislation could lead to the release of information on innocent people mentioned in the federal investigation. 
The bill forces the release within 30 days of all files and communications related to Epstein, as well as any information about the investigation into his death in federal prison. It would allow the Justice Department to redact information about Epstein’s victims or continuing federal investigations, but not information due to “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.” 
Even before the bill's passage Tuesday, thousands of pages of emails and other documents from Epstein's estate have been released from an investigation by the House Oversight Committee. 
Those documents show Epstein's connections to global leaders, Wall Street powerbrokers, influential political figures and Trump himself. In the United Kingdom, King Charles III stripped his disgraced brother Prince Andrew of his remaining titles and evicted him from his royal residence after pressure to act over his relationship with Epstein. 
<h2>Trump's reversal on the Epstein files</h2> 
Trump has said he cut ties with Epstein years ago, but tried for months to move past the demands for disclosure. 
Still, many in the Republican base continued to demand the release of the files. Adding to that pressure, survivors of Epstein's abuse rallied outside the Capitol Tuesday morning. Bundled in jackets against the November chill and holding photos of themselves as teenagers, they recounted their stories of abuse. 
“We are exhausted from surviving the trauma and then surviving the politics that swirl around it," said one of the survivors. 
Another, Jena-Lisa Jones, said she had voted for Trump and had a message for the president: “I beg you Donald Trump, please stop making this political.” 
The group of women also met with Johnson and rallied outside the Capitol in September, but have had to wait months for the vote. 
That's because Johnson kept the House closed for legislative business for nearly two months and refused to swear-in Democratic Rep. Adelita Grijalva of Arizona during the government shutdown. After winning a special election on Sept. 23, Grijalva had pledged to provide the crucial 218th vote to the petition for the Epstein files bill. But only after she was sworn into office last week could she sign her name to the discharge petition to give it majority support in the 435-member House. 
It quickly became obvious the bill would pass, and both Johnson and Trump began to fold. Trump on Sunday said Republicans should vote for the bill. 
Yet Greene told reporters that Trump's decision to fight the bill had betrayed his Make America Great Again political movement. 
"Watching this turn into a fight has ripped MAGA apart,” she said. 
<h2>How Johnson handled the bill</h2> 
Rather than waiting until next week for the discharge position to officially take effect, Johnson held the vote under a procedure that requires a two-thirds majority. 
But Johnson also spent a morning news conference listing off problems that he sees with the legislation. He argued that the bill could have unintended consequences by disclosing parts of federal investigations that are usually kept private, including information on victims. 
“This is a raw and obvious political exercise," Johnson said. 
Still, he voted for the bill. “None of us want to go on record and in any way be accused of not being for maximum transparency,” he explained. 
Meanwhile, the bipartisan pair who sponsored the bill, Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ro Khanna, D-Calif., warned senators against doing anything that would “muck it up,” saying they would face the same public uproar that forced both Trump and Johnson to back down. 
“We’ve needlessly dragged this out for four months,” Massie said, adding that those raising problems with the bill “are afraid that people will be embarrassed. Well, that’s the whole point here.” 
<h2>Senate acts quickly</h2> 
Even as the bill cleared his chamber, Johnson pressed for the Senate to amend it to protect the information of “victims and whistleblowers.” But Senate Majority Leader John Thune quickly shut down that notion. 
As senators gathered in the chamber Tuesday evening for the first votes of the week, it became clear no one would object to passing the bill as written. 
Just before Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called to pass the bill by unanimous consent, Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican who is close to Trump, walked in the chamber and gave Schumer a thumbs-up. He then walked over to Schumer and shook his hand. 
“This is about giving the American people the transparency they’ve been crying for,” said Schumer, D-N.Y. “This is about holding accountable all the people in Jeffrey Epstein’s circle who raped, groom, targeted and enabled the abuse of hundreds of girls for years and years.”

WASHINGTON — Democrats on a U.S. House committee on Wednesday released emails of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in which he said President Donald Trump knew about the financier's relationships with underage girls. 
But the White House said the emails were selectively released to create a false narrative, and House Republicans responded by making public 20,000 more documents. 
One of three emails released by Democrats on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee is a private correspondence between Epstein and associate Ghislaine Maxwell in 2011 in which Epstein said Trump "spent hours at my house" with a victim of sex trafficking. 
In a separate email with author Michael Wolff in 2019, Epstein stated that Trump "of course knew about the girls as he asked Ghislaine to stop." 
Epstein and Wolff also discussed in an email whether they could "craft an answer" for an upcoming Trump CNN interview, with Wolff characterizing Epstein’s leverage over Trump, saying, "If he says he hasn’t been on the plane or to the house, then that gives you a valuable PR and political currency." 
<h3>Thousands of documents</h3> 
Democrats on the committee said the emails were among more than 23,000 documents obtained from the Epstein estate that it is reviewing. 
"The more Donald Trump tries to cover up the Epstein files, the more we uncover," said Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the committee’s top Democrat. "These latest emails and correspondence raise glaring questions about what else the White House is hiding and the nature of the relationship between Epstein and the President." 
But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused the Democrats in a statement of floating "selectively leaked emails to the liberal media to create a fake narrative to smear President Trump" and "distract from President Trump's historic accomplishments." 
"The ‘unnamed victim’ referenced in these emails is the late Virginia Giuffre who repeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever and 'couldn’t have been friendlier' to her in their limited interactions," Leavitt said, adding, "The fact remains that President Trump kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club decades ago for being a creep to his female employees, including Giuffre." 
The information in the three emails released Wednesday is sure to renew focus on Trump’s relationship with Epstein, who hanged himself in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on more charges. Trump has repeatedly denied being close to the former financier. 
Republicans on the Oversight Committee responded by releasing more than 20,000 other documents they said have been obtained from Epstein's estate. 
A Republican spokeswoman, Jessica Andrews, said in a statement that among the thousands of documents that the Epstein estate has released are the names of Democratic officials. 
"Democrats continue to carelessly cherry-pick documents to generate clickbait that is not grounded in the facts," Andrews said. 
But much of the focus as of Wednesday was on a Democratic-released April 2, 2011, email from Epstein to Maxwell, who is currently in prison on charges of trafficking young girls. He wrote: "i want you to realize that that dog that hasn’t barked is trump ... [VICTIM] spent hours at my house with him, he has never once been mentioned. police chief. etc. im 75% there" 
<h3>Justice documents</h3> 
The release of the emails came as a new Democratic House member from Arizona, Adelita Grijalva, was sworn in Wednesday. 
After delivering a floor speech, Grijalva signed a discharge petition to trigger a vote to release files related to Epstein, giving it the needed 218 signatures. The vote would require&nbsp;the Justice Department to release all unclassified documents and communications related to Epstein and his sex trafficking operation. 
&nbsp;House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said a vote could come quickly. 
“We’re going to put that on the floor for a full vote when we get back next week,” Johnson said. 
The speaker is required by House rules to hold the vote, despite opposition from himself and his GOP lieutenants, because 218 signatures have now been collected on a bipartisan discharge petition. But he could have delayed it a bit longer, into early December. 
Long Island’s two Democratic House members supported&nbsp;the bipartisan effort to force release of all federal investigative files. 
But Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Amityville) has called the maneuver being embraced by Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) and Laura Gillen (D-Rockville Centre) "reckless" and led by "extremists from each party more interested in stirring the pot than solving problems." 
On Wednesday, his fellow Long Island Republican Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) said he also opposed the effort. He said there is no language in the bill being proposed to protect the privacy of the survivors of the “horrific” crimes or “that justice is carried out properly.”

The thirst for information on the&nbsp;Jeffrey Epstein sex offender case hasn’t waned among Long Island Republican voters following a House Oversight Committee’s release of files related to the late financier's case&nbsp;this week.&nbsp; 
From Bellmore to East Islip, many voters said while the administration should release all the so-called Epstein files, there are other quality-of-life topics they view as more important. Many also agreed it’s important to remember the victims involved in the case as the <a href="https://www.newsday.com/app/news/nation/epstein-maxwell-congress-justice-department-trump-k68380" target="_blank">public consumes more lurid details</a>. 
Jay Weinstein, of Bellmore, a co-leader of the Bellmore Patriots — a group formed in 2020 to "fight everything that is draconian on Long Island" — said the consensus opinion among Make America Great Again supporters is the files should be released. It was a promise President Donald Trump made, he said. 
"Why it hasn't been released? We have no idea," he said. 
While he supports everything Trump has done during this administration, he agreed to feeling let down just on the Epstein files. He said if anything incriminated Trump in the files, Democrats would have released them years ago. 
"People want to see what millionaires and billionaires are in there, what celebrities were on the island," he said. "They want to know all the facts." 
After Trump appeared to backtrack on campaign promises to disclose additional information — causing strife among some of his most loyal followers in his Republican base — a new bipartisan push has emerged to release details. Some of those details emerged this week after the House committee released a sexually suggestive letter to Epstein <a href="https://www.newsday.com/news/nation/trump-epstein-signature-sex-n05252" target="_blank">allegedly signed by Trump</a>, who has denied it is his. 
The Epstein files refer to all the information federal prosecutors collected during the sex trafficking investigation, which many believe could implicate other politicians and celebrities associated with Epstein. 
Wendy Yao, of Bellmore, another co-leader of the Bellmore Patriots, said she supports the release of the files but doesn't believe the administration has mishandled anything, saying the information needs to be reviewed carefully to protect victims. 
"There's going to be some serious names on there and it could impact everything from our stock market to our business world," she said. 
<h3>Secrets kept</h3> 
Georgette Sheahan, 58, of Nesconset, stood next to her pickup truck with her mini&nbsp;poodle, Daisy, who had just been groomed Tuesday, and said the Trump administration should release the Epstein files. 
"We need to know what is going on," said Sheahan, a registered Republican who said her political views lean toward the middle. "I feel that a lot of things are kept secret from us." 
She said she ultimately cares more about what affects her quality of life than what happens with the Epstein case.&nbsp; 
"I worry about $400 going to Walmart and you get five bags of groceries," she said, noting prices never declined after they spiked during the pandemic. 
Tom Hansen, 67, of East Islip, a registered Republican, said he feels the names on the list should be released regardless of who may be embarrassed. 
"Lets get it over, once and for all," he said, adding that he doesn’t care whether Trump or someone else facilitates it. "As long as the information gets out, let the chips fall where they are going to fall. People are going to be embarrassed? Too bad." 
He said he just wants to see guilty people "brought to justice." 
"Children were abused, and that's the worst thing that's possible," he said. 
Public interest in the case ratcheted up in July when the Justice Department said Epstein did not have a "client list" and no further information was set to be released. Later that month, The Wall Street Journal reported on Trump’s link to the Epstein letter that was released this week, resulting in Trump filing a $10 billion lawsuit against the paper and its owner, Rupert Murdoch. 
This week, Trump called the Epstein topic "a dead issue" in a <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-calls-epstein-birthday-letter-dead-issue-rcna230042" target="_blank">phone call with NBC News</a>. 
<h3>Branding problems</h3> 
Pollster Mike Dawidziak, a political consultant who works mostly with Republicans, said the "American public seems obsessed" with the Epstein case across the political spectrum. But he doesn’t see it becoming an issue that influences voters in the way economic woes, inflation and immigration did last year. 
"It's not a quality-of-life issue for voters," he said in an interview. "That being said, it has caught the imagination of the American public." 
He said polls on Trump’s approval rating show he scores worst on his handling of the Epstein files and added it was a topic he spoke about often as a candidate, promising to release files. 
The Justice Department released files in February but most of the information had already been publicly available. 
"Republicans who give him pretty much a bye on almost everything aren’t giving him a bye on this," Dawidziak said. 
Long Island's two Democratic House members <a href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/epstein-files-fl5hm4ak" target="_blank">have joined an effort</a> led by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to force all the federal investigative files to be released. The two Republican House members on Long Island have not joined. 
Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, said the popularity of a party and its more prominent leaders often influences voters more than localized issues. If the Epstein saga has damaged Trump’s brand, that could ultimately affect local elections, he said. 
"That partly explains why Republican members of Congress are trying to get out in front of the issue by demanding a fuller release of potential evidence," he said in an email. 
He said both major political parties have branding issues, but said the Epstein case could be an "outlier" when it comes to branding problems "because, for now, it seems to be having the most impact on the opinions of his most loyal MAGA supporters." 
He said it would ultimately take a "much more major revelation" for the party to suffer serious damage from the Epstein case. 
<h3>Promises unkept</h3> 
John Miller, 58, of Smithtown, said the files should be made public but he was unsure how much they would reveal. 
Miller, who said he’s not registered with a political party but leans right, said he believes there are more important topics to focus on, from the wars overseas to health care issues. 
"The problem with the United States is we don't look at the important things because it's not as exciting," he said. 
Brad Cohen, 58, of Smithtown, who views himself as an independent, said he believes the files "can incriminate many powerful people." 
He said Trump was elected "on a lot of promises," some of which he has kept and some he has not. 
"That was one of the things that he said he would take care of and that he would release, and he didn't," he said. 
Will Osorio, 52, of Bellport, said the current administration should do more to release information on Epstein "but they’re not because of the money." 
"We’ve all seen pictures with Trump with Epstein," said Osorio, a registered Republican who said his political views are what’s "right." "We’ve seen pictures with a lot of people with Epstein. And they still don’t want to tell you exactly who was with Epstein." 
He said beyond politicians, music moguls and other celebrities seemingly had ties to Epstein. 
"There’s a lot of people that could be implicated," he said, "and nobody wants to go down on the Titanic."
