Nominees are tapped -- for an election unlikely to occur
Republicans and Democrats last week nominated potential contenders to run for Suffolk County treasurer this fall, even though the contest for the $192,191 a year post will likely evaporate long before Election Day.
Both parties nominated activists employed at the Suffolk Board of Elections: Irene D'Abramo for the Republicans and Matthew Bucaro for the Democrats.
The county legislature recently approved a bipartisan compromise to move up the merger of the treasurer's office into the comptroller's office come Jan. 1. The resolution had to allow 60 days for a permissible referendum.
That means if a group wants to gather petitions with about 16,000 signatures, it can force a public vote on speeding up the merger from 2018 as approved by voters last year. If no one files petitions, the law will take effect sometime in August and clerk of the county legislature will inform the elections board there is no need for a treasurer's election in light of the new law.
