We went back.

We did some checking to track down each of the nine menacing-looking photos featured in Joe Lhota's latest ad, "Can't Go Back," centered on the New York City that Lhota claims Bill de Blasio's "recklessly dangerous agenda on crime will take us back to." The photos are mostly from the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. But one of them is from a December 2012 slaying in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn -- a color photo when it appeared online, shown in black and white in the Lhota ad.

1. Rioting near Tompkins Square Park in 1991, by photographer Q. Sakamaki. [A previous version of this post incorrectly dated the picture to 1988.]
