This might be a good week to contact your local member of Congress — all five lawmakers who represent Long Island in the U.S. House say they are homebound as Washington, like New York, digs out from last weekend’s snowstorm.
After votes that were scheduled in the House on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week were canceled, and the federal government remained shut down, the lawmakers were all planning to stay in their districts for at least the next few days, an email survey found.
Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) “will be in his district office in Massapequa Park all week for constituent meetings,” said his top aide Kevin Fogarty.
Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) also remained in the district, said her spokesman Coleman Lamb.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-St. Albans) “will work in the district and may go to Iowa to campaign for Hillary,” said his press aide Ladan Ahmadi, referring to the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) is in the district and then will attend a Democratic retreat in Baltimore that will feature entertainment by comedian Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” and addresses by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) provided the most detailed list of events for his snow holiday week.
“Here are just a few specifics Congressman Zeldin is working on,” his spokeswoman Jennifer DiSiena wrote:
“(1) Announcing the February 1st opening of his East End Congressional satellite office, which includes setting the office up this week;
“(2) Recording a video to help build support for his legislation to stop the sale of Plum Island;
“(3) Finalizing a major legislative initiative for our veterans to be announced in the next couple weeks;
“(4) Meeting with Suffolk County Community College officials regarding the VA’s VetSuccess Program;
“(5) Attending the Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) Job Expo; and
“(6) Meeting with a large gathering of local fire fighters.”
