Shelter Island hotel guest found dead in water after swim, police say

A Manhattan man staying with his family at a Shelter Island hotel was found dead Wednesday under a nearby dock after failing to return from a swim, the police said.

Spencer Korwin, 38, was last seen about 8 a.m. on Wednesday after he entered the Shelter Island Sound near Crescent Beach from a dock at the hotel, the Shelter Island Police Department said in a news release. Korwin's wife contacted hotel staffers hours later, at which point first responders were activated for a search.

The police did not identify the hotel.

Marine units from fire departments in East Marion, Greenport and Southold aided in the water search, as did the Southold Town Police Department's marine and dive team. Southold and Shelter Island police drone units, along with and the U.S. Coast Guard, also took part, the authorities said.

Divers found Korwin underwater near the same dock he used to begin his swim, the release said. He was and pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the "apparent drowning" will continue as the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office determines Korwin’s "cause and manner of death," Shelter Island police said. The department does not suspect criminality and believes the incident was "accidental in nature."
