Shoreham private detective to plead guilty, court filing says

A Shoreham private detective accused of paying off an NYPD sergeant to get information on witnesses from a confidential law-enforcement database is expected to plead guilty on Tuesday, according to a Manhattan federal court filing.

Private eye Joseph Dwyer, 47, was charged in 2014. A letter from his defense lawyer Guy Oksenhendler, filed last week, said he “reached an agreement” with prosecutors and asked U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan to schedule a “change of plea” hearing.

Nathan has set the hearing for Tuesday. The letter did not specify what charges Dwyer will plead to, and Oksenhendler did not respond to calls for comment. Dwyer was charged with a bribery conspiracy.

Dwyer, who worked as an investigator for defense lawyers in federal court, allegedly paid $9,000 to now-retired NYPD Sgt. Ronald Buell for data on 45 people. Buell is negotiating an “expected plea agreement,” according to a letter from his defense lawyer.
