The Stony Brook University student killed this week crossing Nicolls Road lived in off-campus housing and is from China, officials said Friday.
Shubo Lin, 20, was struck by at least two cars, possibly three, and died in the road near the south entrance to the Stony Brook University Medical Center. His parents have been notified, police said.
Authorities said Lin had a student visa that was issued in Shenyang, China. It was not immediately clear what Lin was studying at Stony Brook.
Two of the cars that hit Lin stopped at the scene, police said. At least one witness said Lin was hit by a third vehicle that did not stop. Police said the accident is under investigation.
"At this point, it appears to be a sad and unfortunate accident," Det. Sgt. James Madden of the Sixth Squad said.
The accident occurred just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. No charges have been filed.
Police said Lin was not carrying identification at the time of the accident. Investigators got his name from someone at the school who believed it was Lin who had been fatally struck. They then got his student visa, which included his fingerprints.
