Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by multiple cars while crossing Nicolls Road from east to west near an entrance to the grounds of Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The accident occurred near South Drive at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, Suffolk police said.

They have not released the identity of the pedestrian, pending notification of next of kin, and have not said whether the dead person was a man or woman.

The victim was struck by at least two vehicles - and possibly three, police said. The drivers of two cars stopped and were interviewed by police at the scene.

Police said it remains unclear if the driver of the third vehicle struck the pedestrian, or if the driver was aware someone had been hit.

That vehicle was headed northbound on Nicolls.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
