A two-car crash in Middle Island Thursday killed one driver and left another with burns, Suffolk police said.

Patricia Moon, 51, of Rocky Point, was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Medical Center shortly after the crash, police said. Traci Gillow, 49, of Sound Beach, was taken to the same hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

A 2007 Mercedes-Benz driven by Gillow was traveling southbound on Middle Island-Yaphank Road about 5 p.m., police said, when it apparently veered into the northbound lane south of Whiskey Road in Middle Island and collided with Moon's 2003 Hyundai.

The Mercedes caught on fire after the accident and Gillow was burned, police said. The Middle Island Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire, police said.

The accident happened inside the Rocky Point State Pine Barrens Preserve, near the southern edge of more than 5,000 acres managed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, where the vehicles ended up crashing into trees.

Detectives asked that anyone with information regarding the crash contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
