Man dead in LIE crash involving tractor trailer, police say
Suffolk County police are investigating a serious crash on the Long Island Expressway that left a man dead and closed the roadway in both directions near Exit 53 on Saturday morning.
Suffolk County police said the driver of a 2012 Cadillac, Sergio Vargas, 28, of Queens, rear-ended a tractor trailer, causing the semi to overturn. Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger in the car, Sasha Adams, 28, of Bellport, was critically injured and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The expressway was shut just after the crash, near the entrance to the Sagtikos Parkway, at 5:13 a.m.
The truck driver, Juan Arroyave-Garcia, 37, of Englewood, New Jersey, suffered minor injuries, police said.
The roadway was reopened at 11:06 a.m., police said.
