1 hurt in power plant fire, generating unit damaged

A fire that appears to have started with an oil leak on the grounds of the decommissioned Shoreham nuclear plant damaged a separate power generator and required the use of fire-retardant foam to be brought under control Tuesday, a fire official said.
One plant employee had minor injuries and was being treated at the John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, said Kevin McQueeney, chief of the Wading River Fire Department.
The "peak" generating unit at the Shoreham power station appeared damaged, McQueeney said. The fire will be investigated by the Brookhaven fire marshal and National Grid, which owns the unit. While the cause is unknown, McQueeney said the fire appeared to start with a leak in a lubricant-oil tank near the generator.
The nuclear power plant, which contains no nuclear material, was unaffected.
