A taxicab passenger was killed in a two-car crash in Holtsville Sunday that closed a portion of Nicolls Road in both directions for several hours before it reopened in the late afternoon, authorities said.

Suffolk police said they are investigating the crash that occurred shortly before noon near Portion Road, when a 2006 Ford taxicab overturned on Nicolls Road. At least one person was ejected and another person was injured.

The taxicab and a 2014 Jeep were traveling south on Nicolls Road next to each other when they collided near Express Drive South. Authorities said both vehicles "drove off the road and into the center median," where the taxicab overturned, ejecting a male passenger.

The taxicab driver and the passenger were brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, where the passenger died, police said. Police had not released the passenger's name as of Sunday night, pending the notification of his next of kin.

The taxicab driver was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and the driver of the Jeep was not injured, police said. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
