2 arrested in Patchogue street robbery try

Two Patchogue men were arrested, charged with attempted robbery, after police said they tried to steal a cellphone from a man walking along a local street late Sunday.

The attempted robbery took place on Carmen Street in Patchogue at 10:40 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

The victim, identified only as a 49-year-old man, called 911 to say he had been approached by two men in a white Mitsubishi Galant and that one had exited the vehicle, pointed "what appeared to be a black handgun" at him -- and demanded his phone, police said.

The victim refused, police said. A brief altercation ensued. Then, police said, the suspect got back into the car and fled the scene empty-handed.

The victim was uninjured.

Police said Fifth Precinct officers James Lennon and Brian Panuccio saw a vehicle fitting the description, stopped it on Norton Street in Patchogue and determined the two men in the car had been involved.

Andre Quick, 19, of Grove Avenue, and Jared Hartley, 20, of Rose Avenue, were both arrested and charged with first-degree attempted robbery.

Both were arraigned Monday and each held pending bail of $40,000 cash or $120,000 bond.
