Two people were killed in Suffolk County over the weekend in separate car accidents.

Maria Nunez, 82, of Coram, was killed Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Route 112 in Medford, Suffolk police said.

Four people, including two young children, also involved in the collision suffered minor injuries, police said.

Nunez was at the wheel of a 2003 Ford Focus, heading north on Route 112, at about noon when her car drifted into the southbound lane near Stuyvesant Place and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe carrying a family of four, police said.

She was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, police said.

The family in the SUV -- driver Edward Montalvo, 41, of Coram; his wife, Karen, 36; and their 4- and 7-year-old children -- were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Suffolk police asked that anyone with information about the crash call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

A man was killed in another head-on car collision Saturday night, Riverhead police said Sunday.

Julio Velez, 50, of Mastic, died in the crash, police said.

Velez was driving east on County Route 58, just east of Oliver Street, when his vehicle entered the westbound lane for unknown reasons, police said.

His car collided at about 8 p.m. with a sport utility vehicle driven by Lawanda Clemons, 36, of Riverhead, police said.

Clemons and passengers Devin Clemons, 20, of Riverhead, and Paul Shorter Jr., 21, of Middle Island, were treated at the scene and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for minor injuries, police said.

Velez was extricated by Riverhead Fire Department workers and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An investigation revealed that Velez also had been involved in two minor accidents west of the location of the head-on collision and had fled the scene both times, police said.

The probe into the fatal accident is ongoing, police said, and no charges had been filed as of Sunday evening, police said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Riverhead police at 631-727-4500.
