Two drivers were injured, one of them seriously, when a truck working on the reconstruction of Route 347 in Hauppauge was struck by a car Thursday, Suffolk County police and fire officials said.

Police said a Subaru traveling east slammed into a 2006 Mitsubishi truck making a turn from the westbound side of Route 347 at the intersection with Route 111 at 8:22 a.m. Both drivers were taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said.

Police said the driver of the Subaru, John Melgar, 29, of Huntington Station, was seriously injured. The driver of the truck, Glenn Staff, 52, of Deer Park, was treated for back pain and difficulty breathing.

Det. Sgt. John Twiname of the Fourth Squad said the driver, an employee of Grace Construction, told them the accident happened when he pulled into an area between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

"At least part of the truck was in the eastbound lanes," the sergeant said. He said no summonses were issued.

The crash closed Route 347 in both directions for several hours, but traffic was moving in both directions by 1:30 p.m.
