An 18-year-old Melville girl was critically injured and another driver also hurt in a head-on collision early Tuesday on Vanderbilt Parkway in Dix Hills, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Jacqueline Koslosky, 18, was driving her 2008 Nissan Altima west on Vanderbilt near Winthrop Drive at about 9:30 a.m. She lost control, crossed the center line and crashed head on into a 2004 Lexus sport utility vehicle driven by Fran Ross, 48, of Dix Hills, police said.

Both were taken by Dix Hills Rescue to Huntington Hospital, police said.

Koslosky suffered head injuries and was listed in critical condition. Ross was being treated for neck and back injuries, police said. Her injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police could not immediately say if bad weather was a factor. The accident remains under investigation.

Police said the accident occurred in front of Half Hollow Hills East High School, which delayed opening two hours Tuesday because of the bad weather. Koslosky was not a student, police said.

Around midday, the silver Altima sat in the middle of the road in front of the high school, while the black Lexus remained embedded in a pile of snow nearby. Both cars appeared badly damaged.

Debris from the accident was scattered across Vanderbilt Parkway.

Amid an icy rain, Suffolk Crime Scene Section officers photographed both cars and took measurements. Later, the cars were removed.
