2 hurt in N. Amityville drive-by shooting
Two teenagers were shot early Saturday by someone who fired at least a half-dozen times from a car at a group standing outside a North Amityville home.
A 16-year-old Huntington Station girl was struck in an undisclosed part of her body and was listed in serious but stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. An 18-year-old Copiague man was hit in the calf. He was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and released.
Police said the shooting occurred outside a home on Ronald Drive East when a car rolled by about 12:15 a.m. and fired at the group, including the wounded teens.
Neighbors in the quiet neighborhood of neat homes said a large group of teenagers was having a party at the home when the shooting occurred.
"There were about 100 to 150 people, lots of cars coming into the neighborhood, music blaring," said Lois Thomas, 63, who lives across the street. She said she heard gunshots, followed by the sirens of police and medics.
Neighbors said they were surprised by the violence.
Gary Bradshaw, 48, who lives about a block from the site, said, "It's a quiet neighborhood." So quiet, he said, that he thought the gunshots were firecrackers and was not initially alarmed.
No one answered the door Saturday at the home, which had decorative frosted front windows for Christmas.
Neighbors said a single mother has lived there with a number of children for several months. There had been no other disturbances at the home, neighbors said.
Detectives ask anyone who witnessed the shooting to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152, or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
