Two boys running across a Central Islip street were struck by a livery car Monday, leaving a 13-year-old in critical condition from a head injury and an 11-year-old hospitalized with broken bones and other injuries, Suffolk police said.
Mario Quintanilla, 13, of Clayton St. and Kevin Amaya, 11, of Elmore St. were crossing Lowell Avenue toward the Long Island Rail Road's Central Islip station when they were hit just before 3 p.m. Quintanilla, who sustained the head injury, was taken to Southside Hospital, police said. Amaya who sustained a broken arm and leg, and a facial injury, also went to Southside Hospital.
Abdul Rauf, 24, of Bay Shore, an attendant at a Pilot gas station just east of the LIRR station on Lowell Avenue, said the pair came there often and were in the store Monday. Moments later, "I saw one kid, he's bleeding from his mouth and people trying to help him, cleaning his mouth, and the other one, he doesn't move, his eyes closed," Rauf said.
Det. Sgt. William Rand of the Third Squad said police do not believe the 1999 Lincoln Town Car that hit the boys was speeding when it struck the pair in the left of three northbound lanes.
The driver, Lynval Cameron, of Union Boulevard in Bay Shore, had a valid driver's license and remained at the scene, police said. He was not cited.
There is no intersection or crosswalk at the spot where the two were hit.
Thomas Laino, 30, of Central Islip, and his fiancee, Lydia Rowland, said they saw the accident as they turned onto Lowell. "One car ran into the kid and he just flew several feet over," Rowland said.
