Eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in the Brentwood area were closed for more than four hours Saturday morning after a multivehicle crash that seriously injured two people, Suffolk County police said.

At least three vehicles were involved in the crash that occurred near Exit 53 about 5:30 a.m., a police spokeswoman said. The lanes reopened about 9:45 a.m., police said.

Luis Espinali and Jose Paulino, traveling east in a 2004 Nissan, were struck from behind by a 2003 Lincoln, police said.

The Nissan flipped over, landing upside down on the guardrail on the right side of the expressway, according to police.

Police said Espinali, 44, of Coram, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Paulino, 42, of Central Islip, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital. Both were in serious condition Saturday night.

The driver of the Lincoln, Fausto Narvaez, 28, of Shirley, was not injured.

Police said no criminality is suspected.
