Suffolk County police are investigating a two-vehicle accident in Rocky Point on Saturday morning that seriously injured an elderly driver and closed a portion of Route 25A for several hours, a police spokeswoman said.

A man, 85, was driving a 2004 Lincoln south on Broadway when his car collided with a 2000 Saturn traveling west on Route 25A about 9:03 a.m., police said. The names of the drivers were not immediately released.

"Detectives believe the driver of the Lincoln went through a red light," said a police spokeswoman.

The driver of the Lincoln was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital; the driver of the Saturn, a 19-year-old man, was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson for minor injuries, police said.

Seventh Squad detectives and emergency crews were investigating nearly four hours after the accident, on Route 25A near the bypass, where the road turns into North Country Road and the hamlet's business district, a police spokeswoman said.

Portions of Route 25A were closed at the bypass in both directions until 1:20 p.m., police said.
