Town of Huntington officials have approved the purchase of a Fort Salonga property to use as passive park land.

The price of the 3.5-acre Tannenbaum property is not to exceed $897,500. Before the town closes on the deal, the current owner must remove a house and complete any site improvements.

The acquisition was recommended by the town's Environmental Open Space and Park Fund Review Advisory Committee for use as passive park land with trails. Trails currently on the property are already used by hikers and runners.

A public hearing on the acquisition was held Dec. 6, 2014. The town board voted 5-0 at the Nov. 5 town board meeting to approve the purchase.

"This adds on to some adjacent existing trails in the area," town spokesman A.J. Carter said. "The EOSPA committee feels this is a good addition."
