Three people who abandoned a fishing vessel in water 12 miles south of Shinnecock were rescued Sunday by a ship with good Samaritans, the Coast Guard said.

There were no injuries and the Coast Guard did not release the identities of those rescued.

The captain of the fishing vessel Vincenzo notified the Coast Guard command center in New Haven of flooding, according to a news release.

After providing the ship's position, the captain and the two other crew members boarded a life raft with an electronic position-indicating radio, the Coast Guard said.

Another fishing vessel, the Rhonda & Denise, responding to a Coast Guard broadcast, then rescued the three, the news release said.

A Coast Guard rescue boat crew from Station Shinnecock then transferred the three aboard its rescue boat, the release said.

Officer Anthony Kozak, an operations specialist with the command center in New Haven, praised the preparedness and calm of the Vincenzo's captain.

"He notified us before abandoning ship and gave his last position," Kozak said. "He was calm the entire time, right up to the point where he was stepping out of the cabin to board the life raft."
