3 fuel tankers, 1 driver taken out of service at Suffolk safety checkpoint, police say
An overnight fuel tanker safety check in Suffolk County resulted in eight summonses issued and three tanker trucks and a driver taken out of service, Suffolk police said Thursday.
The safety checkpoint included an inspection area set up in the Park and Ride lot on Wicks Road in Brentwood and took place between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Police said inspections were conducted by the Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety Section in conjunction with state police, the state Department of Transportation, state Environmental Conservation police and state Department of Taxation and Finance and the county Consumer Affairs Bureau of Weights and Measures.
A total of 12 trucks were inspected during the five-hour checkpoint, police said, adding that the three trucks and driver ordered out of service were all due to unspecified “safety hazards.”
Six of the summonses were for equipment violations, police said. Two summonses were for violations of environmental conservation law. Police said inspectors did discover an unspecified violation of tax laws, but said no citation was issued.
