Three people were sent to the hospital after a fire broke out in a St. James basement early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Michael Grayson, first assistant chief of the St. James Fire Department, said fire officials received a call reporting a fire on Deepwells Lane at 5:55 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the three residents of the home had gotten out by themselves, Grayson said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, the cause of which is now being investigated, he said.

The three residents were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. No firefighters were injured.
