A routine traffic stop early Friday in Mattituck led to the arrest of four teens in connection with a series of recent burglaries in Southold, police said.

The four -- John Purpura, 18, of Jamesport; Brandon Coscia, 18, of Jamesport; Daniel J. Trimper, 18, of Riverhead; and, Maria Schafer, 18, of Riverhead -- were charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglar's tools, Southold Town police said.

The arrests were made at 12:45 a.m. after a traffic stop on New Suffolk Avenue.

Police said an officer "observed what appeared to be stolen property in the vehicle" and a subsequent investigation revealed two summer residences in the Park Avenue Extension area of Mattituck had been burglarized. Police said break-in attempts had occurred at three other residences.

The four teens were held overnight and face arraignment Friday in Southold Town Justice Court, police said.
