4 Suffolk police officers treated after truck fire on Long Island Expressway

Four Suffolk County police officers were treated for smoke inhalation Wednesday morning after responding to a fire in a pickup truck that was carrying pool chemicals on the Long Island Expressway in Medford, authorities said.

The fire in the 2008 Ford pickup being driven by Gary Cavazzini, 28, without a license, started about 9:05 a.m. on the eastbound shoulder near Exit 63, Suffolk County Assistant Police Commissioner Justin Meyers said.

Meyers said the truck is owned by Integrity Pool Management, based out of Patchogue, and that a chemical reaction from pool chemicals in the bed of the truck ignited the fire.

Meyers said Cavazzini was alone in the truck and was not injured. He was issued a summons for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Meyers said.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also responded to the scene to handle the cleanup, Meyers said.

A police spokeswoman did not have any additional details about Cavazzini or where the police officers were treated.
