4th person pleads guilty to trashing, burglarizing homes
The last of four people who burglarized and vandalized several homes in northern Brookhaven Town pleaded guilty Wednesday morning.
Darnell Loften, 20, of Middle Island, pleaded guilty to five counts of second-degree burglary and one count of second-degree attempted burglary. In return for the plea, state Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro promised to sentence him to 4 years in prison.
During questioning by Cho, Loften admitted breaking into homes in Miller Place, Centereach, Port Jefferson and Setauket, taking jewelry and electronics. He did so with Maurice Jones, 20, and Sion Sosa, 19, both of Centereach, while Colleen Elam, 18, of Selden, acted as their driver.
In addition to stealing from the homes, the group trashed the insides of the houses and, in some cases, terrorized dogs who lived there.
Elam was sentenced to 5 years of probation. Jones and Sosa, who pleaded guilty in December, were sentenced earlier this month to 3 1/2 years in prison.
