Five firefighters were injured while battling a Hampton Bays house fire early Monday, including two hurt when a floor collapsed inside the residence and the pair fell into the basement, the Hampton Bays fire department said.
One firefighter had a head injury and another had burns on his head, neck, face and hands in the floor collapse during the fire on Quail Run, south of Newtown Road, Southampton Town police said.
The other injured firefighters had mostly minor burns and exhaustion, and were treated and released from Southampton Hospital, a fire official said.
Neither police nor a spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Fire Marshal had more information on the severity of the injuries.
Monday night, Southampton Town police said one of the two more seriously injured volunteer firefighters, Lewis Scott, is a sergeant in their department. Scott remained hospitalized at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
The other firefighter, also hospitalized Monday night at Stony Brook, was identified as Shay Lohr.
Jeanne Landsiedel, who lives across the street from the house, said she knew something was wrong when she looked out and saw the blinking lights and heard the noise of sirens.
The 3,300-square-foot house is down a long, narrow driveway, and firefighters had to run hose from their trucks in the street to get to it.
Landsiedel, one of the first people to move onto the street, said the family who lived in the house had been there more than five years. She described them as "very nice people," and said they were staying with friends in Flanders.
A phone call to Hampton Bays fire Chief Stefan Borell was not immediately returned.
According to a release from Borell's department, fire departments from Hampton Bays, Southampton, Flanders and East Quogue responded to a call at 12:16 a.m. All residents had escaped the burning house on their own when firefighters arrived at the scene, the report said.
Police said firefighters had extinguished the blaze by about 2 a.m. The Southampton Town fire marshal's office is investigating.
