A Bellport gun buyback program, at which weapons were exchanged for cash, yielded 53 guns and 28 high capacity magazines Saturday, said Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert.

The collection was 20 handgun revolvers; eight rifles; three shotguns; four assault weapons (including two AK-47s); 16 semi-automatic weapons; 28 high-capacity magazines; and two pistols (one, a Luger), she said.

The buybacks took place Saturday morning at Lighthouse Mission and was sponsored by Kepert and the Suffolk County Legis. Rob Calarco.

Kepert called the day a "huge success," and said $7,570 were doled out to gun owners. She added that an individual and a foundation had donated $26,000 for buyback programs. More are planned, she said, including one in Gordon Heights.

The payouts were based on the weapon. Assault weapons, handguns, rifles and high capacity clips could be turned in for $200, $100, $30 and $20, respectively, Suffolk police said.
