Sixth Precinct officers in Suffolk will donate $8,500 to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson and scholarships to a senior at each high school in its precinct.

The check from Sixth Precinct Cops Who Care, to be presented to hospital officials Thursday at the police station in Selden, will refurbish a common area used by children in long-term recovery for traumatic brain injuries and their families, police said. That will help cover new toys, furniture, paint and electronic equipment, such as a television and video games, police said.

The scholarships to be offered to seniors will be $1,000 each, police said.

Cops Who Care is a nonprofit that raises funds to help various groups and individuals within the Sixth Precinct, which covers most of the northern half of Brookhaven Town. The nonprofit's police officers raise funds through various events, from golf outings to comedy shows.
