9 hurt as school bus from Bronx crashes on way to Long Island Aquarium

A school bus taking 32 children from the Bronx to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead crashed into the back of a pickup truck Wednesday, sending nine people to the hospital with minor injuries, Riverhead police said.

The GMC pickup had stopped on West Main Street in Riverhead to allow another vehicle to turn when the bus, owned by Boro Transport of Brooklyn, failed to stop, police said. The crash occurred at about 11:20 a.m. at the Raynor Avenue intersection.

Four children, four of the nine adult passengers and the pickup driver were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries, police said. The injured children were between 6 and 12 years old, police said.

Police said a safety inspection on the bus was done and no summons was issued to the bus driver, Gabriel Rivera, 29, of the Bronx, or pickup driver Gilberto Tascon, 59, of Hampton Bays.

Bus company officials could not be reached for comment.
