A 91-year-old man who had struck a neighbor with his cane and then barricaded himself in his Centereach home Tuesday night was later arrested by Suffolk police, authorities said.

John Walsh was taken into custody, but not until after a police command post was set up near his home at 41 Coleman Rd., and Emergency Services officers and the Hostage Negotiations Unit arrived, police said.

Walsh was charged with criminal mischief, civilian harassment and menacing, police said.
