An accident with several injuries has closed westbound Sunrise Highway in Brookhaven, the Suffolk sheriff's department said early Friday morning.

Several people were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center after the accident, which happened shortly before 10:45 p.m., sheriffs officials said.

Sunrise is closed between Exit 56, which is Station Road, and Exit 57, which is Yaphank Avenue and Horse Block Road. It was expected to reopen shortly before 2 a.m. Friday, according to the state transportation department.

Details on cause of accident and number of people injured were not immediately available.
