A Bay Shore driver led police on a 2-mile ground and air chase Wednesday -- until he drove into a dead end street in Central Islip, Suffolk police said.
Adam Hunstein, 26, of Denver Avenue, was being held overnight for arraignment on Thursday on charges of driving while intoxicated by drugs, unlawfully fleeing the police, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and resisting arrest.
He was driving a Ford Escort erratically just before 11:30 a.m. and when Third Precinct officers tried to pull him over at Brightside and Carleton avenues, he sped off, police said.
Patrol vehicles followed him, and the chase was picked up by a police helicopter, authorities said.
Then Hunstein turned into the dead end Cherry Court and bailed out of his car, police said.
After a brief foot chase through backyards, Hunstein was caught, about 12 minutes after he first fled from officers, police said.
Hunstein was treated for minor injuries, police said. No one else was injured and there was no property damage, police said.
