A section of New York Avenue in Melville closed by a water main break for hours reopened at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Suffolk County police said.

The road had been closed between Newtown Lane and Flatbush Place, police said, after the break was reported at 8:26 a.m.

The water main is part of the South Huntington Water District, but the agency said it could not immediately comment on the cause of the break.
