The state issued an air quality alert for New York City and its northern suburbs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, and forecasters said showers and thundershowers could move into the entire metro region later in the day.

The National Weather Service said the rain could be accompanied by gusty winds across Long Island and the city.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said in issuing the air quality alert that people should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity.

People who are especially sensitive to poor air quality, such as those with asthma or heart disease, should consider calling their doctor, the agency said.

Temperatures in the city could top out at 91 degrees Wednesday, while the high on Long Island was expected to be 88, the National Weather Service said. Winds were westerly at 7 to 14 mph.

Both the city and Long Island could see showers and thundershowers Thursday, Friday and Saturday, forecasters said.

Sunny skies were predicted for the entire region on Sunday, with the high near 88.
