Cops: Gang member charged in second shooting
A gang member arrested last week in connection with a Southold shooting was charged Wednesday in a Riverhead shooting after authorities concluded the same gun was used in both cases, Riverhead police said.
Albino Dejesus Medina, 20, of Bay Shore, was charged with first-degree assault after a man walking home in Riverhead was shot twice in the back Oct. 10, police said.
Ballistics on the bullets found in the back of Deyvi Perez, 19, of Riverhead, matched the one for a gun used four days later in a gang-related feud, police said.
Perez had told investigators there were two men when he was shot about 11:30 p.m., and Riverhead police said the investigation is ongoing.
The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency surgery and has been released, police said.
Medina was arraigned Wednesday in Riverhead Justice Court and given a $100 bail because he was still being detained by Southold pending a $500,000 bond or $250,000 cash bail.
Medina's attorney could not be immediately reached Wednesday afternoon.
He had been arrested Nov. 12 as a member of the notorious MS-13 street gang and the fifth person that authorities believe was part of a group that shot two men on South Harbor Road in Southold on Oct. 14, police said.
Southold police and prosecutors have said five shots were fired and one of the two victims was also attacked with a machete in what they believe is a feud between the MS-13 and Mara-18 gangs. The two victims were hospitalized at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. Police have not disclosed their conditions.
In that case, Medina was charged with three counts of first-degree assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.
An indictment is expected to be released Friday in the Southold case.
