A Brentwood man faces drunken-driving charges Saturday after he hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk in Central Islip, then drove away, Suffolk police said.

Alejandro Diaz, 33, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on Suffolk Avenue when he veered off the road about 3 a.m. Friday, striking and seriously injuring Mark Pamphile, police said.

Pamphile, 22, of Central Islip, remained in the Intensive Care Unit at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore on Saturday morning, according to the hospital.

Diaz, of Crooked Hill Road, was arrested shortly after the crash, not far from where he hit the pedestrian, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and with driving while intoxicated, police said.

He was held overnight for arraignment Saturday, police said.

The crash briefly closed Suffolk Avenue between Route 111 and Bergen Street, police said.

Third Squad detectives are investigating.
