Babylon boy, 11, seriously hurt in bicycle crash

An 11-year-old Babylon boy who was riding his bicycle in West Babylon Sunday was seriously hurt after he was struck by a car while leaving a parking lot, Suffolk police said.

Alex Point du Jour of Cooper Street was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after he was hit at about 4:30 p.m. by a car driven by Patricia Cavaliere, 71, of Atlantic Avenue in Massapequa, First Squad detectives said.

An aunt, Constance Etienne, said the boy was at the Sawyer Avenue Pool with his older brother when he got struck.

"He has a scar on his head," said Etienne, adding that the Babylon Memorial Grade School student is in stable condition. "But his brain wasn't affected. He is conscious and he has a fractured leg."

Cavaliere was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that police said were not considered life-threatening. A woman who answered the phone at her home Monday said Cavaliere was unavailable and declined to comment further.

Police said the collision occurred as the boy rode out of a parking lot onto Sawyer Avenue near Berkshire Road in West Babylon. He was struck by Cavaliere's eastbound 2007 Hyundai Sonata, police said, adding that no charges were filed. Cavaliere's car was impounded for a safety check and detectives are asking anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8152.
