All 3 in capsized canoe rescued off Rocky Point
Three men were rescued from a capsized canoe in the Long Island Sound Wednesday night after spending 40 minutes in the water, Suffolk police said.
Edwin Arevalo, 24, his brother Jose Arevalo, 28, and a friend, Moises Guevara, 35, all of Patchogue, were taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson and treated for hypothermia, police said.
They were fishing in a two-person canoe just east of Hagerman Landing in Rocky Point about 7:30 p.m., police said, when the vessel capsized a few hundred yards off shore. None wore life jackets, police said. On land, a resident called 911 at 7:53 p.m. after hearing cries for help, police said.
Seventh Precinct officers directed the boat of Marine Bureau Officers Cory Kim and Brian Flatley to the general area, police said. Using a night vision system, they found the men, police said. The canoe was later located and recovered by officers and Rocky Point Fire Department members, police said.
