AM delays on LIRR Ronkonkoma line possible after freight derailment

A freight train derailment near Deer Park delayed a handful of LIRR trains late Wednesday night as Long Island Rail Road workers tried to re-rail the cars before the morning commute, a spokeswoman said.

The derailment occurred just before 10 p.m. while the train was headed west just east of Deer Park on the Ronkonkoma line. No one was injured, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman said.

"There are no trains stranded, but the re-railing and track repair may impact other service," the spokeswoman said. "We may have some delays, may have some trains canceled and may have stops combined."

About midnight, it was not clear whether the derailment would affect the morning rush hour. The line becomes single track farther east, but because the derailment occurred at a portion of the line with two tracks, the spokeswoman said passing trains will be able to operate at a restricted speed on the other track.
