A Hauppauge woman was driving drunk in a crash early Tuesday with an investigator from the Suffolk County district attorney's office, Suffolk County police said.
The accident at 1:05 a.m. at the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road and Route 347 in Hauppauge pinned the investigator, Michael Maxwell, 52, inside his county vehicle, a 2008 Ford Explorer, and sent the other vehicle, 2004 Toyota Sequoia, crashing into a building, police said.
Maxwell had to be extricated from the Explorer by officers from the police's Emergency Services Section, police said.
He and the driver of the Toyota, Amanda Dellegar, 20, were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Dellegar was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated; she will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date, police said.
Investigators and rescue personnel closed Route 347 between Plaisted Road and Mount Pleasant Road for more than five hours; it reopened at 6:15 a.m., police said.
In a news release, police said Maxwell was driving the Explorer east on Route 347, also called Nesconset Highway, "when his vehicle struck a 2004 Toyota Sequoia" driven by Dellegar.
Dellegar was driving southbound on Mount Pleasant Road, and her Toyota struck a medical building at 227 Mount Pleasant Rd.
The intersection has a traffic light, but a police spokeswoman early Tuesday said that investigators were still "unclear as to who is at fault and exactly what happened."
