Police: Riverhead woman charged with DWI after argument
An argument in a running vehicle led to the arrest of two women in Riverside early Thursday, the driver charged with driving while intoxicated and her friend charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and littering, police said.
The altercation occurred on Lake Avenue at about 2:45 a.m., Southampton Town police said. Police said officers observed the two women "arguing" and went to investigate.
That investigation found that the driver, identified as Amelia A. Torres, 23, of Riverhead, was drunk; she was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Police said the passenger, Ashley C. Thomas, 26, of Riverhead, "ignored multiple requests to leave the scene" after Torres' arrest -- and "repeatedly interfered" with the investigation; Thomas was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. Police said Thomas also "threw a water bottle" across the parking lot, leading to a littering violation.
Arraignment information was not immediately available.
