Amityville eyes creating 3 quality-of-life enforcement officers

Amityville Village would create three quality-of-life enforcement officers under a proposal trustees will take up Monday.

The officers would focus on home upkeep violations and violations related to business license and commercial signs. They would also enforce parking regulations.

“If you have one of these nuisances on your block, it’s the most important thing you want your government to deal with,” trustee Nick LaLota said.

The three officers would work part time, earning $16 to $20 an hour for up to 20 hours each per week. There would be no net cost to the village, after the elimination earlier this year of a full-time parking enforcement position that cost about $70,000 annually, including salary and benefits.

Officials at a Village Board work session last week said the quality-of-life officers will free Building Department inspectors and police officers to focus on more specialized tasks.

The Village Board meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.
