Construction at Amityville's Long Island Rail Road station will be finished by the end of the year, the village announced on its website.

Citing information from the LIRR's Babylon Branch line manager, village officials said that a new escalator is being shipped from New Jersey and will be installed within the next two weeks. Work on the station's main staircase, delayed by a month, is already finished.

Amityville trustees earlier this year slashed monthly parking fees for nonresidents at the station from $250 to $150, among the lowest in the region, in an effort to attract commuters who use nearby stations. Trustees have also discussed installing a parking kiosk system that would let commuters pay fees by cellphone, improved parking lot lighting and a new bike rack.
