An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning after he was hit by a sport utility vehicle in Amityville, Suffolk County police said.

Jose Perez of Amityville was crossing Route 110 at Coolidge Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. when he was struck by a 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML430 driven by Jose Cantarero, also 18. At the time of the crash, Cantarero of Amityville was northbound on Route 110.

Cantarero initially left the scene but returned a few minutes later in the SUV involved in the crash, police said. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Police said the investigation continues, and detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553. All calls will be kept confidential.
