Divers responding to a possible drowning at a Southampton beach Saturday found a New Jersey man in the water who was pronounced dead at the scene, Southampton Town police said.

Police said they received a call around 4 p.m. reporting a swimmer had dived underwater at a beach in Emma Rose Elliston Park, but did not return to the surface and had possibly drowned.

Divers found the man, Angel De Santiago Martinez, 29, about 5:20 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Suffolk County Police Aviation and the North Sea, Hampton Bays, Sag Harbor and Mastic fire departments participated in the search and rescue operation.

The Southampton Town police detective division is investigating. Anyone with information can call police at 631-702-2230.
