A Shoreham man fleeing a collision was killed Sunday when his sport utility vehicle crashed into a tree, Suffolk County police said.
As he was backing his 2010 Toyota RAV 4 out of a driveway on Candlewood Road in Brentwood at about 4:45 p.m., Anthony Lapicola hit another vehicle, a 2005 BMW, police said.
Lapicola fled and drove north on Bishop Road, according to a news release, crashing into a tree at Bishop Road and Ninth Avenue, police said.
Lapicola, 50, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the BMW was not injured, police said.
Court records show Lapicola was free on $1,000 cash bail following his arrest in September on charges of drunken driving and speeding. His license was suspended by a hearing officer last year after he was given a separate ticket for speeding in July, a Suffolk County official said.
Lapicola’s SUV was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing, police said.
