Apparent LIRR suicide in Sayville
An eastbound LIRR train struck and killed a 45-year-old Patchogue woman late Friday just west of the Sayville station, an MTA spokesman said.
The death is being investigated as a possible suicide, said spokesman Salvatore Arena.
Arena said the train involved left Jamaica at 8:52 p.m. bound for Montauk. As the train approached Sayville at about 10 p.m., the engineer saw a woman dart in front of him, Arena said.
The train was traveling about 40 mph, he said. The woman was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue, where she was pronounced dead.
Arena said authorities were able to find car keys near the scene that matched a vehicle parked on the station's north side. He said the train was held and did not get underway until 11:10 p.m., arriving in Montauk about 90 minutes late.
