Armed man surrenders after police standoff
A Riverhead man who barricaded himself in his home Tuesday and threatened to shoot arriving officers surrendered after a three-hour standoff, police said. There were no shots fired or reported injuries.
Zdsislaw Skobodzinski, 35, of 3 Segal Ave., Riverhead, was charged with obstructing government administration.
Riverhead police responded to a report of a heated domestic dispute involving Skobodzinski and his girlfriend at their home at 2 p.m., officials said.
Agnieszka Matuszczyk, 26, the girlfriend, and her 6-year-old son, were removed from the house without incident, police said, but Skobodzinski barricaded himself inside.
Traffic was shut down on East Main Street near Segal Avenue and nearby homes and businesses were evacuated, police said.
Riverhead police were joined by Suffolk County Police Emergency Services and Hostage Negotiation Team officers, officials said. Skobodzinski came out of the house and surrendered, police said. An unloaded 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun was recovered at the home, police said.
Skobodzinski was being held in police custody pending his appearance Wednesday in Riverhead Justice Court.
